“The most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical I’ve come across in a long time” – USA TODAY
Synopsis – A Tale of Friendship, Rivalry, and Identity
It all starts when the citizend of Oz head out for a celebration — in commemoration of the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda heads onto the stage starts to tell the tale of Ephaba’s tragic past, and the circumstances that led to her melting (No One Mourns the Wicked). Taking audiences through a flashback of Glinda and Elphaba’s intertwined lives at Shiz University, she describes their unlikely friendship, and where it all turned sour. The latter is ostracised for her green skin, and became a target for bullying, prejudice, and social isolation. Their friendship started when Glinda found a a black pointed hat in a box, giving it to Elphaba as a present before Fiyero Tiggular’s ballroom party. The green-skinned fellow was ridiculed as she arrived wearing the hat, and this made Glinda feel guilty – so she joined her on the dance floor. Developing an unlikely friendship, it marked the start of it all, with Glinda deciding to give Elphaba a makeover to make her “Popular.”
From jealousy to friendship, things take a stark turn as the headmistress, Madame Morrible, discovers Elphaba’s immense magical abilities – sending her to Emerald City to meet the legendary Wizard of Oz. Elphaba invites Glinda along as she felt bad for the hopeful blonde. The Wizard invited Elphaba, and asked her to give his monkey servant, Chistery, the power to fly as a test. Amazed by her abilities, the Wizard unveils a packed cage of winged monkeys, sharing that they’ll become good spies for any subversive Animal activity. Elphaba realizes that she was used, and that the Wizard was a fraud. She runs away with Glinda, down to the highest tower, and hears Madame Morrible declaring that she is a “Wicked Witch”. Elphaba grabs a broomstick to fly, and sets forth on her own as Glinda decided that she can’t risk her reputation. Elphaba then decides to fight the Wizard with all her power, “Defying Gravity”.
Act II takes place years later – Glinda is engaged to Fiyero, yet the man is still deeply in love with Elphaba. While Glinda became the image of the city, she’s secretly miserable about all the government scrutiny. Fiyero then abandons her to help Elphaba escape a government trap – they confess their love in a dark forest, but suddenly senses that her sister is in danger. Arriving too late as Glinda sends Dorothy and Toto off along the Yellow Brick Road, Elpahaba is captured by guards, Fiyero intervenes, and from then on accepts herself as “wicked.”
The citizens of Oz embark on a witch hunt. Mobbing the castle, Elphaba forces Glinda to hide, and Dororthy then drops a bucket of water, melting the Wicked Witch of the West.
Every sharp turn, it sends audiences into a frenzy of shock and emotion. With lessons weaved all throughout, you’ll be gripping the edge of your seat as Wicked takes you on a wild ride through the Land of Oz.
